In 1565, the Spanish expedition team Pedro “Meendendes” de Avilés took up the land and established St. Augustine in search of the legendary Fountain of Youth. Nowadays, St. Augustine is a quaint tourist city with 34 buildings of national historical interest. It is the spiritual hometown of Americans. We will first visit Castillo de San Marcos in Matanzas Bay. The castle was built in 1672 and is a standard defensive castle built by the Spanish Empire to resist the pirate attacks in the Caribbean. The castle consists of a moat, four forts, and several cannons. Standing above the wall of the castle, looking out over the Atlantic Ocean, vaguely sees a pirate ship that is now hidden. The Old Spring Archaeological Park is definitely better than the legend! This is where Pedro Menendez discovered St. Augustine in 1565.Every day, there is a cannon fire show. Soldiers wearing traditional Spanish costumes, with rigorous movements, loud voices, and impressive gunshots, make the whole show more real. The St George Street near the castle is an old Spanish-style historic street that has spanned hundreds of years. Stroll through the old streets, linger in various colonial-era restaurants, bars, specialty shops and street performers. Walking down the street is the famous Flagler College. The university was built by Henry M. Flagler, the railroad king who is called the father of Florida and is the oldest and most luxurious private university in Florida.
